This post is essentially just a little blurb about my new curatorial project, but also an announcement of posts to come.
20 years ago, Ryan Wylie and I started the Free Form Film Festival. It was a beautiful project that toured from city to city and lasted about 10 years. We showed experimental film and video projects across North America and even took our fest to a few places abroad. Recently, I've been feeling the urge to get back into a similar project. The demands of time and responsibility won't allow me to go on tour anymore, so I've created a concept for a project that will exist both online and locally (in physical locations) in the state where I live. The name for this new project, as you've already guessed, is CAULDRON. Think of it as a stew of radical video projects, experimental film, cinema magic, contrarian visual effects, challenging documentaries, and pretty much anything that does NOT represent the classical Hollywood narrative.
You'll be able to view portions of CAULDRON programs here on this Substack (I plan to share as much as I can, with the artist's permission), and I will occasionally share my curatorial experiences with all of you.
For starters, in a couple of weeks, Ryan Wylie and I are going to interview each other about the experience of running the Free Form Film Festival. It will be a sort of one episode podcast, and I will share it here. The story of that project is joyful and chaotic, heartbreaking, contemplative, inspiring, excruciating, and sublime. …At least for me. We will see where Ryan has to say about it.
…In the meantime, I want to share the very first public exhibition bearing the name CAULDRON.
Below is a VERY brief clipshow from the CODECXS Instagram, and the general announcement that I've been sharing around…
If you are local, come see me on Friday!
