In this interview between CODECXS collaborators, Cassy Jones asks Noah Sphere about his newest video project.
CJ: I loved seeing your new video! Most of your work is not online. Why is that?
NS: I have gone on tours and shown work at house parties and stuff like that, but I kind of got sick of it. It’s fun, but it’ll wear you out. I like an audience, but I kind of hate self promotion. So being an (using air quotes) “influencer” is something I’d never do. I’d hate that. So I guess posting my work on a site and letting others deal with it is cool.
CJ: Is this the first time you let a person interview you?
NS: Yes. Don’t ask me to appear in a video though.
CJ: Ha ha, noted. So you just finished this video in, like, a day?
NS: More like four hours. These things can be pumped out really quickly.
CJ: You’ve done a lot of these?
NS: Yes, but mostly anonymously. There are several online, but I won’t tell you what they are. I normally send to some friend and then the friend shares it without saying who made it.
CJ: Why do you prefer that strategy?
NS: I’m not into being known. I normally don’t do this. But I think I’d like to see if something will go viral or not on it’s own.
CJ: Do you think this video will go viral?
NS: No, because you can’t put it on Youtube or Vimeo without getting a copyright claim for the music. I doubt that it will go viral on the Internet Archive. That’s what we are using, right?
CJ: Yes, you may be right. Do you ever use music that won’t get you pulled?
NS: Not really. Messing with the context of popular songs is kinda my thing. I made a video about Nikola Tesla using the Rush song “Spirit of Radio” but it literally would not stay online. Kept getting removed. Too bad, because I think people liked it a lot.
CJ: Let’s talk about your new video, “I’m Blue Da Ba Dee Da Ba Di”.
NS: Let’s not. I was thinking about this. I don’t really want to.
CJ: Oh, why is that?
NS: I can’t think of anything I can say that would help. Like, I’m only going to say what everyone is already thinking.
CJ: You think the video is that obvious?
NS: Kinda. Lazy cops inside a donut. What else is there to say?
CJ: Would you like to talk about how you decided to make it?
NS: No.
(pause)
NS: Because I think 99 percent of us felt the same thing when we say the video footage that I used. Those Texas cops are terrible. That’s what I thought. I think we were all horrified. My reaction is not special.
CJ: You are a difficult interview.
NS: Yes, I am.
